The word ‘wiki’ comes from the Hawaiian word ‘wiki wiki, which means ‘fast.’

A personal wiki is an individually maintained web based platform for organizing diverse information effectively. It allows users to easily document important information, structure thoughts or projects, and optionally share their knowledge. Unlike blogging platforms like Substack, which facilitate content sharing and reader engagement, a personal wiki prioritizes content management and organization, making it an effective tool for personal knowledge management.

The most famous wiki is undoubtedly Wikipedia, which has over 6 million articles and is ranked the 13th most visited site in the world.

Types of Wiki

Wikis come in various forms and can be divided into the following categories:

• Private Wikis, also known as internal wikis, like Nuclino, are used for storing internal company information.
• Public Wikis, also known as external wikis, like Wikipedia, are used to share information publicly on the web.
• Personal Wikis, such as TiddlyWiki, are for organizing personal notes, documents, and files.

While both blogging platforms like Substack and wiki platforms like Notion have their places and some overlap, they serve different functions and cater to different content types.
