My television viewing journey began with what we simply called a "TV" back in the 90’s, before smart TVs became the norm! It served its purpose perfectly, with all the necessary ports to connect to AV equipment. We enjoyed the simplicity and reliability of that classic setup.
The technology landscape is constantly evolving, and the world of TVs is no exception! In recent years, smart TVs have become a popular choice for consumers.
The TV market seems saturated with smart TVs. When I recently went shopping, nearly every advertised or displayed TV was a smart model.
These TVs go beyond the traditional model, offering built-in features like operating systems, memory, Wi-Fi, Ethernet connectivity and processors. While it may seem like a lot of technical jargon, it essentially boils down to this: smart TVs combine some of the functionality of a computer with the familiar experience of television.
Remember the days when the biggest decision about your TV was the size? Well, with the rise of streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime, the way we watch content has changed dramatically. With fantastic content from these streaming services, manufacturers saw an opportunity to bring it to the biggest screen in the home: the TV. And let's be honest, curling up on the couch with friends and family to enjoy your favorite shows is a much more rewarding experience than huddling around a tiny phone or computer screen.
That's where smart TVs come in! Imagine the classic "idiot box" getting a clever upgrade. By integrating essential components like internet connectivity and processors, smart TVs allow you to access a vast library of content directly on your TV through apps. No more buffering or squinting at a tiny screen – just seamless entertainment on the big screen you love. It's a win-win for everyone!
Does this mean it's curtains for dumb TVs? Should you chuck yours out the window? Absolutely not!
In 2024, even though smart TVs dominate the market, there are still compelling reasons to consider a dumb TV. Let's break down the pros and cons to clearly understand which is right for you.
